Hawksbill turtle is one of the smaller sea turtles, rarely growing larger than 140 cm in length. It gets it common name for its tapering head with narrow jaws that form a pointed “beak”, resembling the bill of a bird of prey. This, along with two pairs of claws on each front flipper and the arrangement of the thick shell plates on its carapace help distinguish the hawksbill turtle from other species. Hawksbill feeds primary on sponges and ascidians, using their powerful jaws to feed. They are classified as omnivores, and will also eat various marine invertebrates like jellyfish and sea urchins as well fish and algae. For this reason, they are often found near coral reefs, where their food is abundant.
