Kentish Plover
النقد
Charadrius alexandrinus

The Kentish Plover is a small stout species of wading bird, the commonest of several species of plover that are found in UAE wetlands. It is the most commonly-sighted bird in the lagoons of Ghantoot, hunting invertebrates with the plover’s characteristic run-and-stop stalking method. Despite being named after the region of Kent, in Britain, this species does not breed in Britain. This species is both a migratory winter visitor and summer resident to the UAE, and has been recorded nesting on multiple occasions in Ghantoot. Parent birds will feign injury to defend their young, and pretend to struggle with a broken wing or injured leg, while drawing predators away from the eggs and chicks. Chicks are known to remain perfectly still, “playing dead”, in an attempt to hide from predators.
