The Eurasian curlew is one of the most distinctive of the region's wading birds, which is extremely long, slender downward-curved beak. it uses its long beak to hunt invertebrates buried in the mud and sand of its coastal habitat. It is a migratory visitor to the UAE, and is usually sighted in winter months. It is an increasingly rare bird, as its numbers are in slow decline, which has led to it being classified as "Near Threatened" by the IUCN.
The Eurasian curlew or common curlew is a wader in the large family Scolopacidae. It is one of the most widespread of the curlews, breeding across temperate Europe and Asia. In Europe, this species is often referred to just as the "curlew", and in Scotland known as the "whaup" in Scots.

The familiar call is a loud curloo-oo.
