Greater Flamingo
الفنتير
Phoenicopterus roseus
The greater flamingo is the largest and most widely distributed species of flamingo worldwide. It is a migrant bird, visiting the UAE primarily in the winter. In Ghantoot, small groups of a few dozen birds are usually seen, but flamingos gather in flocks of several thousand of birds in other location within the UAE, most notably in the wetlands of Ras al Khor. Flamingos are filter-feeders, and use the distinctively-shaped beaks to draw in muddy water and filter out edible items like shrimp seeds, algae, and assorted microscopic invertebrates. Their vivid pink colour comes from the shrimp hey eat, and different individuals can vary widely in colour, with some been almost entirely white.
